PoliTGG - Green-Red Coalition / Baden-WürttembergGreen-Red Coalition to Equalize Civil Unions with Marriage   THE SITUATION: One month ago the citizens of Baden-Württemberg, until then a reliable conservative stronghold, were to elect a new state goverment. For the first time in the state’s history, the voters gave the majority to Greens and Social Democrats (SPD). And for the first time in Germany’s history, the Greens were able to garner more votes than the SPD.   THE MATTER: Today Greens and the SPD presented their Koalitionsvertrag (“coalition treaty”), a road map of common projects to be tackled during the legislative term, where the two parties also outlined the new coalition’s approach to LGBTQ issues:   “Lesbians and Gays: Same Duties – Same Rights   By introducing equal treatment for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people, we will give Baden-Württemberg a new tolerant face, and as state government we will act respectful and openminded.   According to the creed “Same Duties – Same Rights” we will make sure that registered life-partnerships* are being equalizied with marriage in the whole state law. […] Regarding taxation, provision, and payment, partnered lesbian and gay civil servants will be treated like heterosexual couples. The equal treatment of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people also has to be enshrined in the constitution. Hence we will of course champion a national constitutional amendment, adding the aspect of “sexual identity” to Article 3, German Constitution. We also want full equalization of LGBT parenting with respect to taxation and adoption laws.   Education and awareness raising are decisive to achieve understanding and mutual appreciation. We will urge the schools of Baden-Württemberg that education about various sexual identities has to be part of the teaching standards and the training of teachers. In a state-wide Action Plan for Tolerance and Equal Treatment we want to develop concepts to reduce prejudices in order to make Baden-Württemberg a trailblazer for openmindedness and diversity.” [translation by myself, original here, p. 74]* German civil unions are called Eingetragene Lebenspartnerschaften, “registered life-partnerships”
